Usually, there are sets to run against a zone and sets to run against man
defenses. There are variations based on who is in and such. Every time
down the court, there are usually certain things to look for so there is
some theory involved. Taking a quick shot is not necessarily bad for
instance. If there are rebounders ready and it is in the flow of the
offense, it can be a good shot. Of course, any offense requires that
shooters make open shots. It has gotten little discussion here, but Field
Williams has been ice cold lately and if he is "making shots", we would have
likely had less post-Charlotte discussion.
As for theory, there is probably a lot of theory involved. Players must
recognize what is going on which is why changing defenses is often
successful at throwing offenses off. Think of it like in football where a
QB and WR need to recognize if there is a zone or man coverage and if there
is a blitz. Most pass play routes have multiple options based on what the
defense is doing. If either misreads, it can of course be disaster.
The above is very generalized and it is obviously more complicated and I am
not sure exactly what the offensive sets are that UC runs. I understand the
open post, but that offense does require more movement and screens and can
be difficult to run if everyone is not on the same page. I do think Bobbitt
and the Williams are as good at cutting to the basket in that offense as any
3-some we've had for awhile.
Anyway, gotta go soon, so I'll stop here and let some one lese add or
correct if they wish.

I've never played organized Bball and wonder, How many offensivepossessions
are sets and how many are just ran with a "theory". What I mean by thatis
try to get the ball inside, swing it around for an open three, and so on.I
ask this because I'm really curious how much coaching is involved duringthe
game, I know how much before the game and practices. I can think ofa
offensive sets after a timeout, and I see once in a while the PG will call
play, assuming coming from the coaches. Thanks guys.
