What happends to the kid after he gets to college is the key. We have seen
this before. In '92 Keith LeGree committed to Louisville and Huggs quick
back-up plan was a juco by the name of Nick Van .. something or other. I
wonder how he worked out? To play here you need to be smart, talented,
intense and willing to work. After watching the Jamar Butler show for the
past ten days he does not fit the description of being in the Bearcat
family. That takes loyalty and work ethic toward yourself, your coach and
the program as a whole. The lame graduation excuse does not hold water. It
is factually wrong and was obviously not well researched by Jamar or the
influence that placed it in his head. Our coach has always been there for
his players first and has always represented the team, university and the
city with pride and a tremendous amount of class. I see none of that in
Jamar Butler. He is talented and I hope he has a fine career at OSU...
Maybe he can not only attend class there but find some there as well. It's
over now. Let's move on! Sorry for the late post on this subject as I was
out of town. WELCOME VINCENT!!!!!!! Glad you are coming here and glad such
a talent wants to be here! ----Original Message-----

Not to beat this thing to death - but let me see if I've got this straight.would
Butler & Twig are friends; Butler seems to have had a virtual life long
interest in playing @ UC & commits orally early; Twig has UC on his list &
infers that UC may well be the leader for his services; however, Butler not
only doesn't convince Twig to come to UC, but rather Twig, on someone's
(parents?) insistence, opts to go to OSU; Twig then prevails on Butler to
join him @ OSU. So we lose the top 2 recruits in Ohio because one of them
has a set of parents that doesn't want him to go to the school that he sort
of indicated was his first choice? And you wonder why college coaches have
heart attacks?

Backing off Jamar for ANY reason is a mistake IMO and likely neverhappened.
Jamar is likely going to be a great player and is a local Ohio kid who
wanted to be a Bearcat his whole life (tongue in cheek).....so WHY
toyou
do anything to jeopardize his verbal commitment.
I'd say Jamar backed out, UC didn't.
I agree. I think our being happy with Banks, and saying (sort of) good
riddance to Butler is a lot of rationalization. Our first choice to go
sothe prom turned us down (or started playing hard to get, if you prefer)
class.we took someone else instead, who we are now saying is just as pretty and
has a better personality, or whatever.
As far as to why Butler actually began to have a change of heart, my
speculation is that it is simply that he wanted to be with his friend
Terwilliger at OSU. Once he made that decision, he had to come up with a
'better' reason, so he said something about academics.
BTW, note how close UC was to having a *great* start on next year's
theHad they landed Terwilliger, they would have had Butler. They just misson
A.J. Johnson. A real bummer.

Subject: [UC Basketball] Jamar Butler scenario
So what do you all think of this scenario regarding Jamar Butler.
Bearcat staff finds out there is a strong possibilty that Isaiah Swann
commit if he is told he can play the one (there is a report on theone).
recruiting page that he will commit to a school where he can play the
Staff brings this up with Jamar and asks if he will consider playing
telling2.
Jamar wants to play the point. Meanwhile Terwilliger and OSU are
goingJamar he can play the point.
Staff starts looking for a relacement for Jamar should he consider
elsewhere and find Vincent Banks willing to commit.
Jamar Decommits, opening door for Swann.
Just some thoughts...But if the staff can land Swann and get a similar
player to replace Butler, it could turn out to be a really good class.
But when are they going to land a center...
