It is quite unfair in that most of the colleges at UC are very reputable
on
a national level. Yet our so called "reputation" is based on the
standards
of University College, which if I'm not mistaken, is being phased out.

Tom,

Can you please back this statement up? Do you know what the mission of
University College is/was or where exactly the reputation is based upon it
nationally?

I am really interested in your source. I have dealt with misinformation
such as yours (even from within the some in the administration itself!)
for
my 8 years in University College and have dealt with administrators who
think the best way to deal with underprepared students is to give them
some
remedial math, English and reading and ship them on with no regard for why
or how they are underprepared. I've dealt with the colleges that have a
stellar reputation (or not in some cases) who claim to have no
underprepared
students and are thus under-serving significant portions of their
clientele.

Anyway, I can go on, but I prefer to shut up now. I am just interested on
how you came about this reputation info. Thanks!

Jon,

The bad rep of University College existed when I was an undergraduate 40
years ago! I remember teasing friends about being enrolled in it. I don't
know why it had such a rep. It might have been because it was a two year
program (I think) and because it seemed to be the refuge of students who
were undecided about their program of studies. We had a somewhat similar
program at my university, which we called General Studies, and people bad
mouthed it all the time. It has been abolished for some time now, and I am
one of the few people who was sorry to see it go.

I was sorry to read that University College was being phased out. I see
nothing wrong with a program geared towards helping students master the
basic disciplines, with a broader focus, which, I think, was one of the
missions of the College.
