I too am disappointed by the defection of Jamar Butler. Banks is certainly
a capable backup, but he doesn't have quite the potential (on paper) that
Butler does. Also, Banks seems to be less of a point guard than Butler, and
I think point guard is an area of greater need for the future.

So, Huggs has had to settle for two backups recently ... Banks and Solumayne
(sp). I think we are kidding ourselves if we pretend that these two players
are, in the main, equal to the two that got away. I realize that things
like this happen once in awhile, but it is cause for concern nonetheless.

I haven't sent a message for a while but I have to in wake of Butler's
situation. I am very disappointed that he currently has backed out of
coming to UC. I really, really hope he rethinks this and comes back to
UC.
It's selfish of me but I have been watching his career ever since he
committed and have been very excited for him to come here for a long time.
It would be great to have him and Banks both next year, well the 2004-2005
season. It was great to see such a great backup plan. Pretty much like
the
Alexander Johnson backup plan. You gotta love Huggs.

I will say that as a huge fan I am getting sick and tired of all of the
players on the team doing stupid stuff that ends up with the Police. I
know
that as a kid in college I did some stupid stuff and nobody cared to call
the cops because I was a nobody but I wouldn't have done that stuff if I
had
the chance to make millions playing Pro Ball. Our football team is just
as
easy a target, with 5-6 times as many players and I don't hear that much
about them. Sure I remember that Gino guy, but for the most part it has
been quiet. I love Huggs but if I'm Jamar it would definitely wear on me
reading about all of these incidents in the paper. I used to just shrug
it
off by saying other teams fans were jealous or the papers had it in for
us.
However, you can only use those excuses so many times. I would also like
to
say that if I made a statement that it has always been my dream to play
college basketball at UC that nothing would change my mind. If it was
truly
a dream of mine! I could only imagine myself holding up a national
championship trophy over my head for my favorite team. BTW - I do
remember
hearing he has a Bearcat Tattoo.

What makes us think that Butler's renege "caused a shift" to Banks?
Both
announcements came on the same day - with Butler indicating that he will
make a decision, perhaps OSU maybe based on his friendship with Matt T.,
in
the near future. Why couldn't the scenario have been that the staff was
pursuing Banks, a Georgia hs poy with huge stats, and then he told them
he
would commit, & let's say that happened on Sunday, they called Butler,
as
a
courtesy, and Jamar decides that Banks' addition is just one too many
guards
with outstanding credentials, along with maybe his folks saying that
perhaps
UC really isn't the place for you - look in the newspaper - and Twig
calling
and saying come to OSU with me.

I'm not sure, and I don't think anyone else knows at this stage either,
which one will be the better college player, but the one thing I am
unhappy
about, while I know and understand you don't get every recruit you
chase,
is
that recently there have been several in-state players that Huggins
appears
to have been interested in having on campus, who have decided to go
elsewhere. That really didn't happen all that much for almost a decade.

It's very uncanny, how similar Jamar and Vincent are as players. Their
stats are almost identical as are their playing careers and physical
attributes. They both were candidates for their respective state POY's.
They both averaged about 30 ppg, 6-8 rpg, 4-6 apg and 4-6 steals per
game.
They are both about 6'-2" and 185 lbs. They both can play the point or
the
2G spot.

I personally like how fast Huggs and Co. made the switch to secure
Vincent's
verbal. The only thing that would be different, is that Vincent seemed
to
favor the 2G spot vs. Jamar wanting to play the point. Does this mean
that
Swann will have more incentive to come to UC or less?

Kudos to Mike Ryan and the BearcatNews.com team, as they were name
checked
by Scott Springer this AM on 700 WLW re: the verbal of Vincent Banks in
the
wake of Butler's jumping ship.
