Well, they always say to think outside the box! :-) However, the
University of Chicago thing is more than a bit much. I've forwarded this to
my daughter who holds 3 degrees from Penn, and who follows their athletics
very closely but it is hard to believe they would be willing to leave the
Ivy League. The question would be whether they would become the Stanford of
the BE, or the Northwestern or Vanderbilt? or even somewhat like Duke, good
hoops but a doormat in football.
Whatever, the more I think about the situation, the better UC's chances of
joining the BE look. Let's assume that the conference retains the
non-football playing schools. If you were the Athletic Director at Seton
Hall or St. John's, considering the basketball program as well as all the
rest of your intercollegiate sports, would you rather add UC or Marshall?
UC or Central Fl.? I just don't think that is even close. And if, as some
of us hope, and Judy Rose of Charlotte has stated, it is more likely that
eventually the football schools in the BE, with some help from C-USA and
maybe others, go their own way, do you really think that UC is not among the
6 schools most logically to be added to get to a 12 team all-sports
conference? It is hard to believe that Goin won't have us properly
positioned -
Richard K.
