Maybe Rod Flowers thought he would be another Dermarr Johnson.
I just remember when the bearcats went to Hawaii about 3 years ago, U.Rhode
Island coach
Jerry DeGregorio (Lamar Odom's High School coach) had a kid named Tiger
Womack who was 6'8"
and 260 who wanted to shoot the 3's and not "bang and rebound". There were
article after article
about how URI only had two guys over 6'5" and one of them didn't want to
rebound or stand near the
basket. DeGregorio didn't have the experience, or guts to bench Womack and
so they had 3 guards
and a tall slow forward who could neither dribble or shoot as well as the
guards on the perimeter.
The opponents perimeter defense ate Womack up all season long.
Remember, when a 6'8" guy dribbles, a 6 footer gets to see it twice before
the big man gets it again.
(once going down and once coming back up) There is a reason that there are
very few 6'10" point guards (when it would be a major bonus to shoot and
pass right over the defender's head.) It is easier for the short guys to
just plain "outquick" the bigger guy 6 different ways. Think about how
Steve Logan used to get all those 5 foot shots with a shotblocker right
there.
Hope Rod finds all he hopes at his new address. I also hope the NCAA gets
rid of this stupid 8/5 rule ASAP.
