conference scenario

I have a hard time seeing the Big East adding more
basketball only
schools, especially one from as far west as
Milwaukee. I
don't see very
many of the current members wanting to travel to
Wisconsin, kind of
takes away from it being called the Big East.

Besides, why would Xavier be a better choice than
some of the other
schools like a Temple?

I find Xavier's inclusion odd, too, and this is not
a shot at XU. Maybe it has to do with athletic
budget, facilities, number of sponsored sports, etc.
But why would the Big East want a second member in
Cincinnati instead of, say, DePaul, which is
recovering in men's basketball, has more of a
history than XU with Notre Dame and the C-USA
schools involved (other than UC), and is in the
second largest market in the country not on the left
coast?

Anyway, what this tells us is there may be a real
push to preserve the current Big East in a modified
form, at least for the time being. Remember, Big
East founder Dave Gavitt is supposedly behind this,
and I'm sure he still wields some political power.

Check out this story from the Cincy Enquirer:

This proposal has some merit. And I certainly
wouldn't mind
having the
XU
game mean more than just bragging rights.
