Richard, good point, but I don't think you have
anything to worry about. College athletics is all
about $$$$ and business. UC makes the tournament, and
therefore generates revenue. The image is secondary.
Besides, I think ADs are astute enough to cut through
the bogus image flak.

As for your ACC expansion concern, I think it's
already been stated that Miami, BC and Syracuse is a
package deal, so to speak (per Miami's insistance, I
think). Plus, IMHO there is no way the Big East is
going to pick USF or ECU over UC.

To be honest I don't care, now or ever, what Xavier
fans, or fans of any
other school for that matter, think or say about any
program at UC. What I
am concerned about, especially at this particular
moment in time, is what
other athletic directors and university presidents
think about UC. I have
no idea whether the ACC Commissioner is going to get
the 7 votes he needs to
add members, but if he does I don't want UC left out
in the cold when the
musical chairs start/end because we have the wrong
"image" with the people
who are going to make the decisions on who sits
where.

Dave Wetzel has an article in which he opines that
in the event the BE is
raided, UConn is the primary school with, or
causing, a dilemma as to where
to go or stay, because of the situation involving
the status of its men's
basketball program versus its football program. But
what troubles me is
that he correctly points out if only 1 school is
added to the ACC (Miami)
and the BE goes looking for a single replacement,
that is likely to be UofL.
How many of us want to see UC remain in the current
C-USA, but without UofL?
Despite our record in men's basketball, UofL with
Pitino is as, or more,
attractive then we are, if for no more reason then
the size of their arena
and their fan base. The same is true of football.
And their athletic
budget, for whatever reason(s), is by far the
largest in C-USA. I'm not
sure there is much we can do about that situation,
but Wetzel also opines
that if there is more than 1 team added it may well
be schools like USF or
ECU as opposed to UC. Now I don't agree with him on
that score, but,

With all of the above, the last thing we need is the
reinforcement of any
negative images that UC's athletic programs may have
with the AD's and
Presidents of the BE schools. I'm as willing as the
next guy to give
someone a second chance - but despite the obvious
need to not convict
someone before all the evidence is in, and the
negative impact it would have
on next year's basketball season, I'm not sure how
long I'd wait before
yanking the scholarship offer to Whaley.

You're right. I read the article wrong and thought
that the brawl occurred
on the Garden City campus, when in fact it occurred
on the Barton County
campus and involved members of Garden City's track
team. Based on my
misreading, I lumped the police into the "Garden
City side" because I found
the timing strange.

It's still odd that the arrest was just now made
when the local Great Bend,
KS paper said it its original coverage that any
arrests would occur within a
few days.

Actually, it appears that it is the police who
have made this
determination.

Hal ('68)

Now, 3 months later, folks on the Garden City
side have
determined that
Whaley was an active participant.
