UC seems like a natural fit for the Big 10(11), but that's not gonna happen
for several reasons.
I think this situation demands that everything start over.
Start by thinking of things from a philisophical point: What conference
alignment is best for the game?
The direction of the NCAA is to concentrate the "power" into the hands of
the elite. There was an analysis awhile back about how the BCS only allows
64 teams a chance at a title - due to conference restrictions. I hate to
use a video game example, but Keith mentioned that his undefeated UC team
couldn't compete for the title. Snapping back to reality - only those elite
schools in elite conferences have a chance.
Why can only 12 team conferences have a FB playoff game?
Why can't conferences have 10 FB teams, maybe 2 nonFB school, all with
regional rivalries, strong traditions, a television deal, and competitive
schedules? No 2 division crap, everyone plays everyone, and there are
enough open spots to schedule other games?
Otherwise you have a game of musical chairs where programs are diving for
the last spots at the grownup's table.
Think about it:
What's best for the "game"?
What's best for the fans?
What's best for TV (the big money)?
What's best for the individual schools?
It would be interesting to dissolve all the conferences right now, and
rebuild them all. Not going to happen, and it shouldn't happen for all the
conferences, but a restructuring appears necessary.

I can speak to the Big 10 situation. There is a desire by some in the Biggame.
10 to add a 12th team and to introduce a Big 10 championship football
Some teams thrown around in the past: Notre Dame, Syracuse andPittsburgh.
If Notre Dame had accepted the overtures by the Big 10 a few years ago, acontract.
championship game would already be in place. What's the motivating force?
Well, it's money of course. A Big 10 championship football game would
easily sell out every year and draw a pretty nice TV broadcasting

I like everything about it, except for the inclusion
of ECU, USF, USM and TCU. These schools are either
too geographically far-reaching, bring nothing to the
table, or both.
I've asked this before, and I guess I'll just have to
keep asking it: Why is having 12 teams and a
conference championship such a priority? The Big Ten,
Pac Ten, and current Big East have done just fine
without one.
