NCAA selection challenge :)

From: Chris
Date: 14 Mar 2003 - 12:03 PM EST

That take is dead on. We are all Bearcat fans who were heartsick after our
loss Wednesday. Joe Lunardi and hopefully the selection committee could
(should) care less about comparing Cincinnati to itself, and there really
aren't teams out there meriting a bid more.

Here is a challenge for ya. Everyone acts like Butler, Gonzaga and Southern
Illinois are into the tournament (wouldn't be so sure myself).

Give me your best argument as to why those 3 deserve a bid more than the
Bearcats?

IMHO, the Bearcats could get a bid every single year guaranteed if they
decided to move to a true mid-major conference (yeah, that's right Mr.
Packer :) ) and beat lower level teams all season. Gonzaga for instance has
been great in the past, but nothing on their resume makes them a better
choice than the Bearcats.

Here is my take. Most of us have grown very accustomed to a certain
level of play from the Cats, and this year pales in comparison. We are
also used to C-USA being very mediocre and this year they are holding
their own. We have as many top 25 teams as the SEC, PAC10, ACC, and Big
East, more than the BIGTEN, and only the BIG12 has more with 4.

Based on past years, we usually had to hold our record to tougher
scrutiny than other teams because their conferences appeared tougher. I
don't think that is the case this year with a few exceptions.

So after the loss, I too wrote off the NCAA based on my own reasoning
that focused on UC. Now that I have focused on the rest of college
basketball I realize that there aren't a whole lot of better options for
the committee to choose from.

I don't think Randy was trying to put down our team. He was simply
stating
some facts with regards to what might keep UC out. Immediately after
the
USM loss, I was resigned to the fact that UC was going to the NIT. The
radio announcers, Dan Hoard and Chuck Machuck, also believed that the
NCAA
bid was gone. Now, after thinking about for a couple of days, I think
UC's
chances aren't that bad. UC is certainly not a lock but their resume
looks
better than a lot of teams considered to be on the bubble.

This NEGATIVE attitude is killing me. We should be supporting our team
and
pushing for them to get in no matter how bad they played and how much
they
don't deserve it.

Let's support our team, not give people reasons to leave them out.

Joe Lunardi (ESPN's "bracketologist") said recently that the whole
selection
process can best be summed up as:

"Who did you beat, when did you beat them, and where?"

If this is in fact the overriding philosophy, UC is in trouble (IMO).
Here's why ....

UC has 3 road wins: TCU, Saint Louis and East Carolina. Two of those
are
the very bottom of C-USA this year. The third has since beaten UC at
the
Shoe. The most recent of these wins was January 22nd.

UC has one neutral court win: Oregon, on December 17th. If Oregon were
still considered as good as they were then, I wouldn't be writing this
message.

UC has one neutral court loss: Southern Miss, on Wednesday.

UC's 2 "marquis" wins, over Oklahoma State and Louisville, were both in
the
Shoe, and both teams have been less than stellar since.

If we could take away any one of 1) the fall of Oregon, 2) the home loss
to
Saint Louis, or 3) the loss to Southern Miss, UC would be in, with room
to
spare. Together, those 3 things will quite possibly keep them out.

I made a mistake in my previous post - it looks like there will be 18
conferences with only one bid - which leaves 47 bids to be claimed.
UC is currently 31 in the RPI. If you go strictly be the rpi the
cutoff as of this morning would be including Oregon at 48 (Weber St
has an automatic bid, from a 1 bid conference at 39). The last four
out would be Texas Tech (50), St. Louis (51), Tennessee (52), and
North Carolina (54). The last four in would be Oregon (48), Indiana
(47), LSU (44), and Gonzaga (43).

The most suspect of those in, IMHO, are UC (31), ASU (32), Alabama
(37) and Auburn (38).

UC, Alabama, Auburn, and Texas Tech are all 4-6 in their last 10.

Amazing to see what the Cats fans think about our chances of going to
the NCAA tournament. The Bearcatnews poll is tied at exactly 132
votes each way.
