RE: Defensive philosophy and lack of offense (was update)

Don't agree with that at all.

Barker, Stokes, Maxiel, Williams, Johnson, Hicks, Bobbitt, Kirkland, Lucas,
Moore, and maybe even Flowers could play the press. That's 11 guys, how
many more do you want. Even if you think that one or two of these guys
can't handle the press that leaves you with 9 or 10 capable bodies.

When you go 20+ games without being able to score you'd think your coach
would make a drastic adjustment.

I think the reason he doesn't use the press more is we just don't have
enough bodies. We clearly don't have the energy to make up for a lack of
bodies in the press, so....

I think Huggins' reasoning for not using the press more is the fact that he
cannot stand to give up easy baskets. The regular defensive philosophy is
working from an opponent production standpoint. Unfortunately, this
philosophy is leading to almost no easy baskets. This team appears nearly
incapable of scoring when running the normal half court offense. So I agree
with you Jon. Unleash the press and let's speed up the game. What's the
point of holding opponents under 60 when your offense can't get 60 itself.

I'm wondering why you weren't at the game?

I agree with you on the press. It's for sure we're not going to beat
a team in the half-court with our offense.

Andy said we were supposed to not show up as part of a protest.

Seriously, I am/was sick as a dog.

The weird thing about the press is that Huggins said he used to run it
because we cannot beat a team in the halfcourt. If you use all his old
arguments, we should be running it. Note that I am contradicting everything
I have ever said here. I have been against the press for the past few
years, but I watch us do nothing until we press and think, well, if we are
going to do nothing anyway, let's press. At least it is more exciting.

And in the halfcourt, Kirkland, Bobbitt, and Hicks try to defend using their
hands instead of their feet and get called for fouls. I think in the press
we create a few steals. SLU's offense in the 2nd half was FT's. They could
not set up anything against our traps and full court pressure. I cannot
believe we do not try it more often.
