RE: Lack of leadership (was Whaley)

Does anyone remember this. (perfect example of leadership)

Bobby Brannen's senior year, we're playing a very crucial conference game
late in the season and DeJuan Baker nearly gets into a skermish with another
player late in a close game and Brannen runs over and physically tackles
DeJaun to keep him from getting a technical. Brannen then proceeded to get
in Bakers ear and let him hear about not screwing up late in the game, then
he calls the whole team together to settle everyone down.

Don't know if I got the details exactly correct, but that was the best
example of leadership I've ever seen.

I think it's going to have to be Max, even if he'll be
a junior. Field will be the ranking senior, but he
seems kind of a quiet guy like Leonard.

In one of the articles today, it was implied that Max
had been getting in some ears this season. If he can
consistently come close to numbers like vs. OK State
next (or even the remainder of this) season, he'll
have the example to back the verbal.

I think one of the biggest reasons for the
inconsistency this season is a
lack of leadership on the floor. I think Huggins
was looking for Stokes to
fill this role this season but I don't think this
role really suits
Leonard's personality. Last season, we had the
luxury of having multiple
leaders (Logan, Davis, McElroy). This season, UC
just has not had anyone
step up and say with actions and words, "this is my
team and I refuse to be
the first team not to win C-USA".

So who will step up next season? That's a good
question.

Notice Jason Williams' comment this morning after
Whaley's reinstatement:
"Whaley is the prized recruit in UC's 2003 class and
is expected to help the
Bearcats be a Final Four contender next season."

Here we are this year worried about whether this
team will show enough
gumption and heart over the last 3/4 weeks of the
season to insure an NCAA
bid, and next year they are already talking about a
possible Final 4
appearance. Maybe that's part of what's wrong with
this year's team.

Did anyone else realize Barton -- or Whaley -- has
been doing this well?
Barton now has a 23-3 overall record, 10-2 in their
league, ranked No. 3 in
the country. Whaley averaging 16.8 points, 8
rebounds and 1.9 blocks per
game. Wow. They've got three 6-10, including Whaley.
Took my eye off the
ball on that one.

Not much information out there - "Team rules
violation"

From:

http://www.cjonline.com/stories/021703/spo_comcoll.shtml

Barton County (23-3, 10-2) starters Robert Whaley,
Rodney Epperson and
Justin Rose and Mauricio Branwell, who came in off
the bench, did not play
against Colby. Assistant coach Matt Skillman said
only that the players were
"suspended for breaking team rules."

All four players were in street clothes and sat
behind the Barton County
bench, where only seven players were suited up.

Listening to the Two Angry Guys this morning,
(actually One Angry Hombre
since Gamble was nowhere to be heard) and
McAllister called in with a tip
that Whaley was suspended this weekend.

More news to follow on McAllister's show today.
