Thanks Bruce,
I am actually aware of quite a few good packages written in PHP. I guess it
comes down to this:

Either option requires a 'authorized' user whether it be through mail
subscription or board registration.

The deterrent for unwanted participants of an email forum is that everyone
knows your email address and you have to be devoted in order to receive all
these emails. Where a message board is easier to hide your identity and it
is easy to post a few rude messages and then not see the consequences
because you don't have to worry about your inbox filling up. It is also a
little easier to ban a user from forum by blocking their email address
(ofcourse it is pretty common to have 5 or 6 email addresses).

I think it also helps that the forum is a little more difficult to subscribe
to. I don't know, like I said, I considered it in the past and the bottom
line is I would be willing to go with the majority.

If there truly is an interest then this might actually be a good poll to
conduct on the website in a special area so that it is only voted on by
people who read the forum or are subscribed to it. We could always test it
out for a while without touching the forum.

I will wait for Keith and Mike chime in also..

Brett,

I understand your concern. However, with the Continental forum, any user
must logon by name (only certified pilots on the seniority list are
allowed)
and any posts are thereby identified.

This would require anyone who wanted to participate to register their name
with the administrators. In that manner, I don't see how you could object
to an "authorized" participant.

It doesn't make any difference to me. However, I've returned from being
out
of town for three days and found over two hundred emails in my
box......most
of which are from this forum...and many of which (no offense) I'm not
interested in. An internet based forum would allow me to view what I
wanted
to see rather than view (and delete) a bunch of stuff that I didn't have
an
interest in.

You certainly know the arguments. I'm trying to find out what software the
Continental Pilots Forum uses so I can let you know.

Just a thought.

Bruce
