Despite the $5 beer, Cincinnati sports are some of the cheapest in the
nation, Bearcats, Reds, and Bengals. At most schools you'll pay have to buy
your tickets and still have to pay $5 for beer. Heck, aren't we still one
of the few schools who even sell beer at games.

There just is no excuse for not getting rid of all the student tickets. I
can see people not wanting to sit on bench seats in the upper corners of the
arena, but students tickets are good seats and are free. It doesn't cost
you one damn dime to go to a game as a student. Drink at home before and
after if that's your excuse. That's what we did as students.

I have no idea how to get the students there... unfortunately I was an
information systems major and not a marketing major. I think giveaways
would be good though. Give away a free quarter worth of books at each home
game or something. That would have gotten me to the game at least (but I
was there anyways). I think UC will always have problems getting commuters
to the games just because they don't really care about UC sports. Many of
them probably never wanted to go to UC but had no choice due to financial
issues.

Maybe lower the price of beer so it doesn't take up a whole hour of work
for a student! $5 a beer is a killer on a college budget, and I would
guess that many of those students just stay home and have a few beers for
less than $5 total. The Reds and Bengals have done the same thing and
basically priced themselves out of the college students budget due to
continued price increases on tickets and on concessions. Even with free
tickets if a student wanted a beer and two hotdogs they've already dropped
$10. They could have bought a whole dinner and 12-pack for the same amount
by not going to the game :).

That is just me rambling with what comes to my head... but as a recent UC
graduate I still can relate to reasons why they don't show up (but can't
relate to why they don't show up). Without a Duke or Kansas showing up
every game at the Shoe I think it will only continue to dwindle down
unless they start marketing more to the students (which I never saw in my
time at UC).

One other thing... kill that stupid commercial on the radio where they do
the rapping... that turns me off from going to the game every time I hear
it :).

Mick I think that you are right in defining the problem, so what is
the solution? I
think that you have to market to those people that are not coming to
the game.
Make it worth their while to come to the game. How do you do that?
I am not
sure, but I would start with having some giveaways at the game and
some pre
and post game events so that they want to come out to the game.
make the
game an event rather than something that these old farts who are
diehards go
to see just becuase they love basketball.

I think today's student is different and some effort needs to be put
forth to
reach them at their level, not ours... It is worth a shot and if
you got them to
the game and they were fired up, it would help the team.

I'd say it is a combination of spoiled by success and no
commuter students going to the games. I would guess that there are only
5000 students who live on and around campus, with probably 4000 tickets
available to students each game. That is asking for a huge percentage of
the campus students to show up. When I was there (up through last
basketball season) no commuter students ever went to the games. I would
ask them and they would say they didn't want to drive for 30 mins to go
see a game. It is sad, but unless we are no. 1 in the country you can't
get those people to drive to the games (it is a similar problem with
football too, with many of the commuters never seeing one football game in
their time @ UC). Anybody else notice this in their time at UC?

On the radio show they announced that a number of
student tickets were being put on sale to the general public. I realize
that Tulane is no Marquette or L'ville but this is pathetic. A saturday
afternoon game with school back in session, FREE tickets for students, a
team that is 3-0 in conference play and that has been CUSA champs for 7
years and in the NCAA tourney for 11 years(?) and Huggs has to tell people
that student tickets are available and that it should be an exciting game.
What the heck is wrong with the students? The students have no excuse,
there is no highschool football or exams or anything else going on at 2pm
Saturday. Have we gotten that spoiled by success?

This group of Bearcats continues to gel. The half
court D is as big a strength as ever and the offense while unpredictable
is coming. A month ago I would not have dreamed that PG would be our
deepest and maybe strongest position. Field's shooting is coming around
and so is Bobbitt's complete game.Max is still growing and center by
committee is not hurting yet. Leonard Stokes being the go to guy is BIG.
For ten years the Bearcats have had to have one on every team. Lazelle to
Danny to Kenyon to Steve to now Leonard it is so important that one guy be
able to take the team at a given point in a game and find a way for the
Bearcats to get the win. They still need to concentrate for ALL 40 mins
and improve the rebounding and shooting. But, the pieces are coming into
place. Look what a month has done for Hicks and Moore. They may not be
our best team ever. But they may end up being our best coached and our
most improved from November to March. Let's do our part and fill up the
Shoe. See you all Saturday!
