Interesting. This borrows from the NHL plus/minus statistic with the
objective being to score or assist on more points than your line gives
up. I wonder if the coaches track this type of information on each
player (i.e. you scored 14, you had 7 assists good for 14 and on
defense, your man scored 11 resulting in a plus/minus of +17). If all
of the players end with positive plus/minus ratings, your team is almost
guaranteed to win.

went something like: "If your not getting it done on the defensive end
of the floor, you better be able to make up for it on the offensive end"
and something like "if your giving up 10 points defensively you better
be able to score more then that". I found those two paraphrased comment
very interesting.
