That rebounding stat is a little misleading. UC was losing the battle of the boards by about 10 for most of the game. They had one possession at the end of the game with the subs in where Hicks and company got about 4 rebounds in a row. They did improve the box outs and effort but they still need to improve big time on the rebounds. They did a nice job handling some funky zones and traps by Valpo. I think one of the problems Huggs will have as the newcomers start to improve is getting that many guys minutes. On hand it is nice to have 7-8 guys get into a solid rotation where they start to feel comfortable playing with eachother. On the other hand he is going to want to get minutes for guys like Hicks, Kirkland, etc. which is really going to expand to rotation to 10-11 guys. I guess it is a nice problem to have. While I think this was a good win, I think Valpo was clearly inferior to UC in terms of athleticism, quickness, etc. Saturday is going to be a huge test. It seemed that last night for the first time guys looked like they were clicking together on offense and defense. They looked much more comfortable and the defensive intensity was so much better. They are getting better each day but the big question is have they improved enough to beat X on saturday. Darnit I wish that game were another 2 weeks from now!

Max only had 2 rebounds and we were outrebounded as a team 38 to 34. I
applaude our dramatic improvement but am cautious to say that we have turned
the corner.

UC did get votes. The polls at ESPN have some votes missing on them. If
you
notice.. UC, UCLA, & Georgia all dropped out of the polls and none of them
recieved votes. I think UC got 76 points in the AP and 41 in the coaches.
It was good to see the Bearcats play tight man to man D tonight compared
to
Dayton where they were playing off their man way too far. Max was a man on
the boards tonight and Johnson looked good. It's amazing how much easier
it
is to rebound when you box out.
Good to see Barker driving and dishing also instead of just passing it
around the perimeter. Valpo's D had to collapse when he drove past his man
leaving Field and Bobbitt open on the perimeter for wide open looks.

While I suspected that UC would drop from the top 25, I was a bit
surprised
to see that they didn't even get a single vote in either of the polls.
Also
worth noting that Huggins is one of the voters in the coaches poll.
Not that this bothers me, it seems to be a pattern the last two years
which
has yielded good results later in the season.
