Dan - I didn't mean for anyone to have to get defensive about their
opinion(s) - it was just to let you know that there are some of us who are
ardent Bearcat rooters who exhibit it in ways other than standing and
cheering through most of a game. [e.g., years ago when we still lived in
Connecticut my wife threatened seriously body harm if one more time I went
out to the car in a restaurant parking lot on a Saturday night and she found
me draped over the front seat trying to get the Bearcats on WLW when she
felt I was supposed to be inside with her and our best friends. I never
could understand her priorities.:-)] We are all in this together!

Ok Ok...
Now this one did hit a little bit...
I didn't say that people that Stand up and cheer are any better to their
community or work any harder than the "Red Sweaters"
However, to start to act as if because they are Doctors and lawyers and
accountants... they have the right, that's not fair,
I know a guy that sits 4 rows behind me that probably works harder and
physically than any of the scenarios you mentioned, he works 60 hours a week
climbing electric poles making sure that those Doctors and Lawyers and
accountants have power so they can over charge their clients. I bet there
are a few military guys that had a pretty busy few months in there too,
who's to say a "Brain Surgeon" deserves more of a break than an off duty
Cop? I don't think this portion should be in the argument at all. I
believe he has just as much right to "relax" by screaming there heads off..
You would think that might HELP a lawyer or Doctor, or accountant, I know I
have a few clients I would LOVE to scream my head off. My point is, I don't
think the "red sweaters" are any better than anyone, and it's not fair to
say they are.
Also, richard(You're not that old, I know, we've met!) I wouldn't say that I
expect everyone to stand the whole game, heck I get tired of that, and
believe yes it should be reserved, the part that drive me crazy is when we
are trying to motivate the team, not just cheer the good play, but when they
are not playing up to speed or need a little motivation, it would be nice if
EVERYONE in the shoe would take part in the cheers. I imagine we would hear
the same thing from the Cheerleaders. I actually get embarrassed for them
at the lack of participation in their cheers(Yes, I agree they could come up
with some that are more fun but...that's another thread). You are right, we
have had some blowouts and maybe that is why it is so much quieter, it is
difficult to cheer when your up by a ton, and almost, unsportsmanlike, so I
understand the points there. In short, it's not just about cheering a good
play, it's about overall "support" of the team, be it a "U C " Cheer, or for
gods sake, just paying attention to the game(again, I know that YOU, do as
well as others on this forum do, I would never doubt your support of the
team)
No one said that the games are the "most important thing in Life", However,
"THE GAME" is the most important part of being at "the game", I mean it was
built for that purpose, If the "Doctors and Lawyers" want to sit and talk to
blow off steam, they can go to their Country Club where they won't hear
something that has been a part of "THE GAME" since it's inception... "REF
you SUCK".
Again, I appreciate the support of the UCATS(remember I donate) and I
appreciate all the UCATS on this board, I understand there isn't much that
can be done with it, and will live with it. Don't take the "Red Sweater"
stuff so personally, it's not directed at you, unless you go to the games as
strictly a social event and you turn your nose up at people that cheer etc.
It does get a little elitist down there, I've sat down there, and of course
was dressed nice, and would just listen to people treat people rudely that
weren't "regulars" they would yell more to get them to "Sit down" an be
quiet than they would to support the team.

P olls
Richard: I am with you. I am at an age where not every little thing
impresses me and drives me to wild, feverish, thunderous applause and
shouting. I love good plays. I've been known to applaud the good play of
an
opponent, often leading to quizzical stares from surrounding fans. I expect
college students to have the boisterous, fanatical loyalty to their team.
But that does not mean I like to sit among them at a game and hear all the
4-letter word rantings, typcially "Hey Ref, you suck", or worse. I've been
known to be fanatical in support of the Bearcats, particularly in games
against Ohio State in football, Xavier, Louisville, Marquette and Memphis in
basketball, et al. But I can't get really excited about every play in a
30-point blowout of UAB or Southern Miss. I don't mind the "red sweaters"
taking the night off mentally after operating on someone's brain earlier
that
day or spending all day in the courtroom prosecuting a patent infringement
case or selling a $1 million life insurance policy after three weeks of
running numbers for an indecisive client. These folks probably have been
supporting the 'Cats for 30-40 years and know that win or lose, someone will
call them up the next morning and have some emergency that must be resolved
by noon. It is part of life. Basketball is a wonderful diversion. We as
Bearcat fans can just be happy that we follow one of the top programs in the
nation with a wonderful tradition and history. The games are fun, and we
feed off our love of competition and our affection for UC and its athletic
program, but the games are not the most important thing in life.
