Player allegedly hit woman who played Otto

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse guard DeShaun Williams was scheduled to be 
arraigned Thursday on assault charges following a barroom brawl in which he 
allegedly punched the school's mascot Otto the Orange.

Williams, a junior, was held in jail following his arrest at a campus bar 
shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Tom Connellan, a police spokesman.

"The victim said she was on the dance floor with several friends and Mr. 
Williams came over with some of his friends. There was some bumping into 
each other and some words were exchanged, and after that Mr. Williams turned 
around and hit the victim in the face," Connellan said.

Nicole Wilcox, a senior who served as Otto the Orange for three years at 
sporting events, was hurt in the fight. She was treated at Crouse Hospital 
for a large gash over her left eye and released, Connellan said.

The university also was investigating the incident and Williams could face 
university sanctions, said school spokesman Kevin Morrow.

It was not Williams' first brush with the law while at Syracuse. In March, 
Williams was charged with driving while intoxicated. Reports said he had a 
.15 percent blood-alcohol content, above the state's legal limit of .10 
percent. He was later convicted of driving while ability impaired.

The incident resulted in a three-game suspension for Williams, a two-year 
starter.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was in New Orleans attending a coach's conference 
and was not available for comment.
