Hal,

We can agree to disagree then...you have no logic
in your argument. I agree that all the incidents
AT UC reflect poorly on the university and even
an arrest is bad (even when there is no conviction).
I agree that just because other schools are having
similar problems (which are not pointed out so
frequently in the press) that the problem still
exists and needs fixed. I agree that graduation
rates are an issue that needs addressed (and I
believe has been). But I do not see ANY justification
for the argument that what a player does in the
NBA is a result or a reflection of any kind on
the university. Sure its great when these players
have accomplishment ON THE COURT and we can say
they played at UC. But it is not logical to say
that what they do off the court is a result of their
time spent at UC. Maybe Huggins has taught them to
be thugs, punch people on the court, etc...but to
suggest this is indefensible since you do not know
for sure. None of these players exhibited this type
of behavior while at UC and its also amazing that
many of them that exhibited poor behavior (one incident
or two) while at UC have "cleaned up their act" and
have not committed similar acts since leaving UC.

Their player development was a result of UC. But UC
cannot police them once they leave the university. By
implying that this reflects on UC, you are essentially
claiming that UC taught them to be thugs...many of these
players had a clean slate while at UC...

This would be the same as saying that an employee reflects
poorly on his/her former employer or on their school if
they had a behavior problem post-graduation or post-employment.
It is logic to say that a person gained valuable knowledge
or experience from their school/employer, but not necessarily
a valid conclusion that their persona was altered also.

Of course what Fortson, Martin, and Van Exel do in the NBA reflects on
UC.
This is why we all pore over the stats in the morning paper to see how
they
and the other former UC players did the night before.

We can't proudly proclaim their unique individual NBA accomplishments
without simulaneously accepting the same sort of "ownership" of the
rest.

I am proud Oscar Robertson attended my university. Part of my pride
derives
from his accomplishments in the NBA. At the end of the day, I hope to
be
able to say the same of Fortson, Martin, and Van Exel.

Also, what these players do in the NBA is no reflection on UC as
a program. I have no idea why Fortson or Martin have gotten so
many flagrant fouls, but this did not happen at all during their
career at UC. Why Van Exel is always so disgruntled also has
nothing to do with UC.
