Here's a response for the uninformed idiot, I mean person...
thought you might be interested in what he had to say...
Thanks for taking the time to write.
I based my story on the NCAAs latest graduation rates, which show
Cincinnati mens basketball with about a 10 percent rate for players
entering during the early to mid 1990s and zero percent for black
freshman players who entered during that time.
As I pointed out, the NCAAs method of calculating rates is quite
restrictive. On the other hand, the rates I've gotten in e-mails from
some Cincinnati fans (a couple went as high as 50 percent) use a formula
that is too lax.
Reality is, as usual, in between. That would put Cincinnati about on a
par with a lot of other schools that don't have the rates they should
have. Some of the fault belongs to coaches who recruit some athletes who
don't really want to be in college and let them spend too much time on
athletics. Some belongs to the athletes and their parents, who don't
have their priorities in order. Some belongs to school systems that
don't prepare kids properly, though some kids don't want to be prepared.
A lot of blame also rests with a collegiate athletic system in which
many colleges give huge admissions breaks to many athletes because
otherwise schools with high admission standards couldn't compete with
schools with lower standards.
I think the biggest scandal in college sports may not be graduation
rates, but rather how schools keep kids eligible when those athletes
don't have the tools to compete academically. Minnesota appears to be a
recent example of that.
As far as the Chicago public school system goes, it's well known its
academic performance has been poor. Arne Duncan is in his first year on
the job, and his future will depend on whether that performance improves
in the next few years.

BTW, since the article mentions Freshman entering the
program from 1990 to 1994, how many actually used up
their eligibility at UC
Fall 1990 was Huggins second year and I think Bostic
entered then.
Fall 1991 was the class with all of the Jucos and the
start of the Bad Image, because no one can win
legimately if they use Jucos and Jucos are bad
intimdating people they came from a Juco :)
Also John Jacobs redshirted this year.
Lazelle Durden also came in Fall '91 as a Prop. 48. Technically, I'm not
sure if Jacobs counts since he didn't use up his eligibility - he still
had a year left but elected not to play.
Fall 1992 I think was Keith Gregor's first year.
There was also someone named Ford who proved that he
only D-II talent.
Also David Evans, who later transferred to Colorado St.
Fall 1993 was the big class with the Don, Flint,
Burton, Julson, Wolfe, and Marco Wright. Only 2 of
these players used up their eligibility.
Julson might count here, too - didn't he return to UC after playing one
year at Georgetown?
Fall 1994 Danny and Bobby
The Bonus points for our percentage are the Jucos and
transfers (into the progam) they don't count, example:
AD Jackson and Art Long were Soph's when they started
There was something unusual about Art Long's case, but I think he was a
junior when he started at UC. I seem to remember that he committed a
year
earlier, but then some legal and/or academic issues forced him to play
another year at a JC. He certainly only played two years for the 'Cats.
