Pitino certainly brings passion out of people.
I agree that Pitino did a poor job in the NBA, but he's done a great job in college basketball. I can also say that Kentucky fans absolutely loved the guy until he went to Louisville. UC fans probably wouldn't be too fond of Coach Huggins if he resurfaced at Xavier.
His legacy , at the very least, will be his career since I'm betting he will take at least three different schools to the Final Four. If he wins a national title at Louisville and stays for the remainder of his coaching career, I believe Louisville will totally embrace him.

"He's great with the media" because he lies through his teeth.
He's like a salesman that has everything in stock and is going to take a loss in order to give you the best price because he loves you (even though he just met you for the same time).
Ask any Celtic fan what he said about players weeks before trading them. The Boston fans couldn't/can't stand him here in New England (it's been a year since he has gone, yet everyday someone will call a talk show and complain about how ex-Celtics like Fortson and Billups are doing so well), the Knick fans coud care less about him and the Mildcat fans hate him. He lies and lies and lies. He is a great coach no doubt - but ....
The sad part about Pitino is that he has no legacy. Regardless of how well he does at the U of L, that place will always be Denny Crum's school. Who will name a court after him? Who considers him to be "their" coach? I doubt anyone will even retire his jersey (or whatever they do to honor coaches). That's where he has really failed.

I've never been much of a Louisville fan, especially when they were dominating our series in the 80's, but I can respect the job he's done. He's great with the media, and his brand of ball is entertaining to watch. I agree with Jon that today's game with Charlotte was very entertaining.
